Prof. dr. W.C. (Willem Cornelis) van Unnik (1910-1978)Willem van Unnik taught theology in Leiden in 1937 before he was appointed professor in the Exegese of the New Testament and Ancient Christian Literature at Utrecht University in 1946. In the same year, he received the Mallinckrodt-prize for his dissertation. He was a Quaker, and this religious background enabled him to study at Quaker College Woodbrooke in Birmingham, where he specialised in ancient languages and the Semite backgrounds of the New Testament. In 1961, he became Chairman of the Society of New Testament Studies. His religion was important to him, and he joined national religious societies but always with a wider social intention. Van Unnik received several honourary doctorates and became member of the KNAW (Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences) in 1951.
